Much to the chagrin of the community, New Rochelle school officials removed DiRienzo from the district and team on Wednesday, Nov. 13, even as they made their run to the state championship this week.
The decision has drawn the ire and consternation of parents, students and the community, and district officials have been quiet on any details regarding why he was reassigned, other than to say that they should wait until the process plays out.
Yonkers police spokesman Dean Politopoulos confirmed on Tuesday, Nov. 26 that the department currently has an open investigation, though further details have not yet been released.
“I can advise you that we do have an open investigation regarding a complaint alleged to have occurred in the late 1980s; due to the age of the victim at that time, no other information will be released pending further investigative progress.”
